The Pueblo County Beekeepers Association is the largest beekeeping club in Southern Colorado. We are proudly sanctioned by the Colorado State Beekeepers Association (CSBA), which has been incorporated since 1888. And, we are affiliated with the American Beekeeping Federation. As a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Colorado, for over 9 years, we have hosted numerous educational events each year–primarily for our members, and are also open to the public.
Our association supports beekeepers of all skill levels, from backyard and urban hobbyists to small-scale and commercial honey producers. Member dues, event proceeds, grants, sponsorships, and donations all fund our unique member, youth, and college scholarships, outreach materials, general operating expenses, and chance drawings that are held at our events.
The Pueblo County Beekeepers Association is dedicated to promoting sustainable beekeeping across Southern Colorado through:
- Public and member beekeeping education, classes, workshops, hands-on field days, beekeeper certification;
- Our NewBee club member mentoring program;
- Providing members with resources for honey extraction, hive management, pest control, equipment rentals, industry standards, marketing and honey sales support and education;

Steve Gibson was not only an avid beekeeper, but a deeply passionate and generous individual. As one of the founding members of the Pueblo County Beekeepers Association (PCBA), he played a vital role in shaping the organization and mentoring many new beekeepers in the area. Steve was always eager to share his knowledge about bees, whether through teaching, conversations, or simply being involved in the beekeeping community.
Steve was my very first mentor. I can confidently say that I would not be a beekeeper today if it weren’t for his guidance. His love and dedication to youth was also something I deeply admired.
Sadly, Steve lost his battle with cancer, leaving a significant void in the beekeeping community that continues to be felt today.
In honor of his memory, the 2020 PCBA Board of Directors voted to establish a scholarship fund for youth aged 18 and under who are interested in beekeeping. The following year, in 2021, PCBA launched a donation drive for items such as nucs, queens, package bees, and beekeeping equipment to support the Steve Gibson Memorial Youth Scholarship and Chance Drawing.
With these generous donations, we held our first “chance drawing,” with all funds raised earmarked for the scholarship fund.
In 2022, unfortunately, we did not receive any youth scholarship applications. However, in 2023, we worked hard to promote the scholarship through collaborations with the CSU Extension Office and Pueblo County 4-H. This effort paid off, as we received three applications, all of which were awarded funding to support their beekeeping endeavors.
In 2024, we saw even more growth, with a total of six applications, and once again, all six recipients were awarded scholarships.
Each scholarship recipient is expected to volunteer at least two events during the following year, participate in PCBA club meetings, and engage in local community events—honoring Steve’s legacy of community involvement and passion for beekeeping.
